The Milpitas Library

Today is the Grand Opening of the new Milpitas Library. It's probably a zoo there right now.

But we went last week! It was awesome! It was actually open to the public all week, but really, most people assumed it wouldn't open until after the grand opening. I took the family there after work, and, boy, let me tell you, there's little better than a brand-new library that is full of books and empty of people.

We basically had the run of the place. I picked up a couple of graphic novels that I'd had my eye on, but was never interested in enough to buy. (One by Garth Ennis, the other drawn by Josh Howard.) The kids picked up about ten books each.

We explored the whole place. There were cabinets full of historical photos and artifacts. It was very cool to see Milpitas 100 years ago. Made me want to watch Deadwood again.

Aw! This makes me want to explore the new library in our town - it's been far too long since I've actually walked shelves of books and checked things out to physically read - I've spent so much time reading text on a screen I'd all but forgotten that libraries have things like graphic novels, movies, and more. ^^

Sounds so wonderful. Once again, I can hardly believe we live in the same state. It truly is like you live in a different world. Quick question for you: how will they keep psychos out? Seriously, I just don't feel comfortable taking MeiMei to the library because there are so many mentally disturbed homeless/halfway house people milling about the parking lot, playground and lobby, sleeping in chairs, washing their feet in the sinks, etc. ek_man will take her, he sees the weirdos but is not a freak magnet like I am and has never been hassled. Humboldt county has a higher percentage of 5150's (documented), but they must be in your neck of the woods, too. Wonder how your library will stay family-friendly and safe.

I realize how terrible this post probably looks --- clarification: psychiatric patients wandering the streets of Eureka is really is a problem here --- and while I am concerned about the welfare of the homeless (and donate regularly to a local shelter), I had one experience when kurii was about 8 where a street woman started screaming at him --- so I got spooked.

Oh, don't worry. It's not incongruous to watch out for your family's safety and to have compassion for those less fortunate. This coming from a guy who's had a neighbor stabbed to death, and a wife who was born and grew up in San Francisco. I get it.

I think we're will positioned, geographically. We do have some 5150's here, but I think they mostly gravitate to downtown San Jose and San Francisco.
