All of a sudden, like, in the last two or three weeks, I'm seeing references to Neil Gaiman on almost every web site and in nearly every individual web journal that I regularly follow. What's up with this? Did he just hit that hundredth-monkey point or something? Did he just make the jump from "successful 'specialized audience' author" to "Stephen King-esque mega-celebrity author" or something? His web journal certainly has a casual, conversational charm I envy; but those artsy sidebar "d@mn I'm good, and chicks dig me" photos are somewhat off-putting. Well, that, plus I had a "comic book geek" friend who used to prattle endlessly about Sandman, to the point where I made an active choice to avoid ever looking at it because I was sick of it before having ever seen it. Another point-of-envy: chicks do seem to dig the guy; at least, they way they slobber in their journals over his writing suggests as much. Now that I think about it -- my comic geek friend used to prattle about how much his girlfriend adored Neil Gaiman, too. Is it really his writing? Or is it the black jacket, not shaving for three days, and hailing from England? Okay, time to bust out one of those blank journals that's gathering dust on the shelf. And maybe find a black jacket.

The sidebar photos are random, but I know what you mean. Your comment here reminds me of my feelings for David Mack's ability to draw. I'm jealous sick of him. I fell in love with Gaiman because of Sandman back in the '80s. Chris Bachalo's Death didn't hurt, either. Yum! I stayed in love because of Stardust and Anansi Boys. Gaiman seems genuine. I've learned to accept my niche favorites' rises to popularity. It's better than death my obscurity. Yea for Ben Templesmith, on that regard, too! Go, Wormwood!

Are you following The McCloud "Making Comics" Tour on LJ? http://community.livejournal.com/mccloudtour/ They had lunch and spent the afternoon with Neil Gaiman today. (Photos forthcoming, they promise. We'll see what the guy really looks like!)

Wow, I haven't thought of Scott McCloud since I read Understanding Comics many years ago. (The book smelled funny. Like the ink never completely dried. I still remember that.) I should subscribe to that feed. Interesting idea!
