Backup of David's Google+ Posts

I'm on the cusp of being "that guy"* when it comes a Google use case scenario.

Generally, I back up new material to my personal cloud. And I already have Python scripts that use Google APIs and use the Python Image Library to resize and manipulate photos.

Google doesn't count images smaller than 2048 x 2048 against our storage quota on their cloud.

I have a stack of data DVDs with archived photos over the last two decades. And we can't trust optical media for long-term storage.

So, what if I were to run a PIL script over the photos on disc, make sure I have a copy (that's under 2048x2048) of every photo, and then upload them all to a protected Google album?

Does Google still call it Picasa? Or is it all Google+ now? Would I useĀ https://developers.google.com/picasa-web/docs/2.0/developers_guide_protocol, or is that already deprecated?

How long until Google discontinues the product I use, though? When they do, will they provide time for me to recover my data?

*"that guy": I can imagine this conversation at Google: "If we make it so small photos don't count against their quota, somebody's going to upload decades of small photos. Do we want that?"
