Firefox 2 first impressions

I've got Firefox 2 on most of my computers now.

The Bad
The default skin is not an improvement over 1.5.  (I'll be picking a different one.)
The close boxes on every tab require you relearn your behavior, if you're a mouse navigator.  I really want to revert this.

The Good
Tab state is saved across sessions.

The Fantastic
Optional Google Reader integration with the previously useless RSS live bookmarks.

What I've Changed
I've dropped Torisugari's Bookmarks Synchronizer in favor of the more transparent Foxmarks (syncing with my own WebDav server).  Oh, how I wish Foxmarks stored the favicons like Torisugari's Add-on did.  C'est la vie.

I'm really disgruntled regarding the new tab setup for Firefox 2. I become set in my ways easily and I've become used to clicking on one closing button rather than closing each tab individually. With the tendonitis that flares on occasion with me, i'm not looking forward to the extra hand-motion that this will require. i;ve never really been a keyboard-shortcut user either. *makes a face* Phoenix seems to have found some sort of workaround for this though. i'm sure that he'll pass this along. ^_^

He did! He mentioned it in a comment to an old post. It's not exactly what we're looking for, but it does help with the lots-o-tabs arrow thingies.

Agreed, on all points. I was hilariously surprised by the save-state tab behavior, which is very very nice. But at the same time, I'm really aggravated at the new tab behavior and tab scrolling, even though people seem to elsewhere be thrilled with it. I wouldn't mind the theme if it weren't this odd gunmetal gray; if it were a little brighter, I'd like it more. I really like the redesign of the default theme for the Mac OS X version though, it looks a bit more polished and smooth. Still, I'll be waiting with baited breath for a new version of Qute (the theme that started Firefox on the path to 1.0) whenever it'll be available. Foxmarks is love, I absolutely adore it. Syncing with your own server, eh? Very nice. :)

If a site has a detectable feed, there'll be a little orange feed icon at the right of the address bar. In 1.5, clicking on that added the feed to your live bookmarks. In 2.0, clicking on that does a user-selectable task, like add it to your bloglines or google reader list.

Ahhhh, very very nice. Regarding the per tab close icons, it sounds like it's time to get used to ctrl-W.

Takes it right back to the way it used to be. :)

W00T! That's awesome! Thanks so much, Phoenix! I'm also getting rid of that "go" button! Now, have you found a skin you like for 2.0? None of the ones I like are complete for 2.0, yet.

Well, I'm sticking with Qute, the theme that the Mozilla folks used for Firefox back when it was called Phoenix. ;) http://www.quadrone.org/graphics/ I've been using it since it was the default theme, and I was heartbroken when the designer and the Mozilla Foundation fell out and went their separate ways, but thankfully he's still doing the theme for free!
