Backup of David's Google+ Posts

In Google+, reshared posts don't have links to the original post. So if you want to see the conversation at the original post, the post has to link to itself like this: http://goo.gl/KrMY1.

Feel free to reshare. And please click on the link above to join the conversation at the original post (if you found this via a reshare, of course).

I've got a feeling that the lack-of-the-original-URL in reshared posts is intentional, and by design. But it seems wrong. I often have wanted to find the original post, only to discover that it's been buried by newer ones in the author's stream.

There's the additional problem of a person broadening the visibility of a repost. For instance, if user A only shares a post with one circle, then user B reshares that publicly, then user C (who isn't in A's circles) comments - then what? There's also the argument that A should be able to take down B's reshare.

I think it's a great idea when the stars align, but those edge-cases might be confusing to many users.

Google+ does put up dialogs preventing or strongly cautioning you against broadening the visibility of content with a repost. The fact that the original post may have been restricted may be the reason Google+ threw up its hands and never provides a link back to the original post.

Another issue may be if I reshare a popular post - maybe a celebrity post - but only want to see my circles take on it. Essentially the opposite scenario as before where the content becomes more restricted.

Maybe the best solution is to have an option to "reshare with link" or something, which would not be available if the content were not public.

My feeling is that if the original post is public, then there should be a URL to it. The URL can be dropped for any reshares that further limit visibility. (Of course, ideally, I'd prefer that I always have access to a URL to an original post that is visible to me.)
